The devastating earthquake that hit Southern Turkiye on Monday could result in a death toll of over 20,000, according to the WHO. The quake was 67km north-east of Kahramanmaraş, a city in the Mediterranean Region of the country, close to the border with Syria. Extensive damage and casualties have been reported in both countries. Hundreds of thousands, including civil war refugees, are misplaced and without food and shelter.
In terms of regional response, Russia has sent rescue teams Middle East nations such as the UAE while Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan have all made emergency funds and support teams available.
Efforts to find survivors are being hampered by the weather, with the regional temperatures close to zero and with freezing rain.
The region has been wracked by civil war, partially introduced by United States political interference in Syria including attempts to overthrow the Syrian Government and create a new US-backed State in the Kurdistan region, which collectively incorporates parts of Turkiye, Syria, Iran and Iraq. The region has the world’s sixth largest proven oil reserves with Syrian access being the easiest and least expensive to operate. Civil war has been in place since 2014 with US troops still on the ground. Regional devastation of infrastructure has been significant.
The regional charity Humanity & Inclusion are accepting donations for care and assistance. Middle East Briefing has donated, and we request our readers (this website is free access) also do the same at this difficult time.
